JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:                    Deputy Engineering Manager

 

Responsible to:          Workshop Manager

 

Purpose:                     To assist with managing the engineering function in the workshop. To maintain vehicles to the standard required  by the company, TfL and VOSA so as to achieve maximum vehicle availability and to maintain costs within the budget set. To be responsible for Health and Safety throughout the garage.

 

Scope:                         To manage a team of staff including skilled and semi skilled fitters, electricians, cleaners/shunters, clerks, stores personnel and contractors. To be responsible for the workshop premises, plant and equipment. 

 

Job Description:         To be responsible for the leadership, motivation, performance measurement, discipline, training and development of the Engineering team.

 

                                   To plan and manage the vehicle maintenance and repair function in accordance with Company policy in such a way as to obtain maximum utilisation of the labour and resources available and to meet the requirements of the Department of Transport Operators licence.

 

                                   To ensure that the needs of the Operating Department are met and that enough vehicles are available for the schedules.

 

                                   To ensure that all vehicles provided for operation comply with the standards set by the Company and VOSA.

 

                                   To manage staff and contractors to ensure that vehicle presentation is maintained in accordance with cleaning specifications and that vehicles meet the standards required by the Company and VOSA.

 

                                   To keep abreast of environmental and technical developments.

 

                                   To ensure that all engineering staff comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Company Health and Safety Policy and other current legislation including COSHH and manual handling regulations. To bring to the attention of the Workshop Manager and/or Engineering Director any relevant deficiencies that may arise.

 

                                   To ensure that Risk Assessments and safe systems of work reviews are undertaken and remedial action taken where necessary.

 

                                   Working within the allocated budget, to ensure that the stores hold adequate material supplies in line with the workshop's requirements. To ensure that all materials under your control can be accounted for.

 

                                   Ensuring that buildings, plant and equipment are maintained at all times in accordance with the Company Group Health and Safety Policy and other statutory legislation. To ensure that external contractors are aware of and conform to the Company Health and Safety Policy.

 

                                   To ensure that all appropriate documentation and records are maintained accurately in order to satisfy the requirements of the Department of Transport Operators licence and Company policies and procedures. To supply information on the performances and operation of the Garage in response to requests from Head Office.

 

                                   To prepare an annual budget for staff and materials and manage the operation within set budgets.

 

                                   Any other reasonable duties as directed by senior management that lies within the scope of the jobholder's responsibilities.

 

Person Specification

 

The post holder should have knowledge of

  • All company policies including H&S, Maintenance and Personnel.
  • An understanding of H&S legislation and practices.
  • An understanding of the standards required by VOSA and the DfT.
  • An understanding of mechanical engineering and vehicle maintenance procedures for all types of vehicles operated by the garage.
  • Electrical engineering.
  • Bus bodywork construction.
  • Company procedures including attendance, sickness, discipline and grievance etc.
